Reducing embodied carbon

Driven by regulations and sustainability, demand for low-carbon building materials is rising. To meet this demand, Eastman developed Saflex LiteCarbon Clear, a premium PVB interlayer that reduces the embodied carbon of laminated glass elements while maintaining the construction of safe buildings.

Building a better world

Balancing environmental impact, safety and aesthetics

The building and construction (B&C) sector is at the heart of the sustainability challenge. Accounting for 37% of global, energy‑related greenhouse‑gas emissions, the industry faces growing pressure from new regulations and corporate commitments to reduce embodied carbon.

As demand rises for lower‑carbon building materials, glazing professionals must consider not only safety and transparency but also the environmental impact of the interlayers they specify.

Saflex LiteCarbon Clear is Eastman’s premium, reduced‑carbon PVB interlayers that help meeting these needs.

With a 37%1 2 lower embodied‑carbon footprint versus standard Saflex Clear (EPD‑verified), LiteCarbon Clear enables the glazing community to address these industry sustainability challenges.

LiteCarbon Clear is the result of our holistic approach to sustainability

LiteCarbon Clear is produced through a well-balanced combination of various sustainability strategies, including the use of dedicated pre-consumer recycled content (ISO 14021), enhanced energy efficiency, supply chain optimization and operational excellence. These sustainability levers led to a significant reduction in its carbon footprint. Post-consumer materials are not used in Saflex interlayer production to ensure quality requirements and safety performance.

Embodied Carbon Calculator

The Saflex Embodied Carbon Calculator is an online tool designed to help you assess the environmental impact of your laminated glass choices. By selecting your preferred glass type and PVB interlayer, you can calculate the embodied carbon of your laminated glass in both tonnes and per square meter. This tool also allows for easy comparison between different configurations, empowering you to make informed decisions in your specifications to optimize the carbon footprint. Once the calculation is completed, a detailed PDF report is generated, which can be emailed directly to you for convenience and record-keeping.
