Harmonic Convergence
A Rich Kaleidoscope of Tropical Colors Illuminates Miami Airport Terminal
Sunlight, sound, and color unite spectacularly in this multifaceted mural in South Florida. Winner of the 2012 World of Color Awards Interior Division, “Harmonic Convergence” provides a unique “immersive color experience” for travelers. While speakers at either end of the walkway resonate with recordings of tropical birds and thunderstorms, sunlight streams through a wall of laminated glass panels encompassing the entire color spectrum.
The resulting “synaesthetic” environment is possible only because of the wide range of color options allowed by the Vanceva interlayer system. Architect Christopher Janney had long imagined large, architecturally immersive spaces filled with colorful light, but “had to wait for a company like Eastman to develop a system of colored glass that would allow me to realize one of these childhood visions.”
Janney has designed many interactive light and sound environments for public spaces, including the Boston, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Miami airports. However, he names “Harmonic Convergence” as his most successful immersive color experience. The multi-hued glass wall affects travelers’ views of the outdoors and interior spaces through the dynamic play of colored light and shadow on every surface. Janney worked closely with Eastman’s color experts to create a scale model of the wall in Vanceva laminates to ensure every color was placed in perfect harmony to the adjacent color. With this project, Janney has truly achieved his dream to “walk in a rainbow.”
