In the midst of a dense urban fabric, the winner of 2012 World of Color Awards Exterior Division stands apart from its surroundings thanks to the brilliant spectrum of colors spanning its façade. The project required an overall informality in its form, texture and spatial environment, and color played a pivotal role in achieving this quality. The chromatic scale of vibrant colors animates not only the entire face of the building, but the surrounding area as well. Once a jewel in British India’s crown, post-independent Kolkata gradually degenerated into an anachronistic urban region that failed to celebrate its rich architectural history and remained unresponsive towards new developments. The architects of the International Management Institute endeavored to reverse this trend by creating an environment that recognized the art and culture of the area while promoting modern, environmentally sustainable architecture that would “add color to the city life.”
From the very beginning planning stages, the choice of building materials was important in determining how the structure would function and fit within its surroundings. Glass, given its dynamism and visual vibrancy, topped the list as a modern urban material which could offer unrestricted dialogue between the indoor and outdoor environments. The material also acts as an insulator, reducing the heat buildup inside while letting in plenty of natural light.
The finished design reflects an energetic environment that is conducive to learning and growth. After its completion, the building attracted visitors from the local area as well as from around the world. Everyone from management professionals to leaders in the film industry finds the spot a lively link between the Kolkata’s rich past and bright future. The building has truly emerged as a significant and beautiful landmark in Kolkata, giving meaning to the urban area’s nickname as “The City of Joy.”
