ANSI Z97.1-2026 has been published, introducing several updates to the long-established standard for safety glazing materials used in buildings. The new edition includes changes that may be relevant for architects, specifiers, manufacturers, laminators, and testing laboratories.
Key updates in ANSI Z97.1-2026 include:
- Vacuum Insulating Glazing (VIG) is now included within the standard’s scope.
- A VIG impact and rating protocol has been added.
- Chemically strengthened glass is addressed more clearly, including an exclusion clarification and an engineering-based exception.
- Multiple weathering references have been consolidated into ASTM C1900.
- Bake/boil thermal testing and result evaluation are now delegated to ASTM C1914.
- ASTM E903 has been added as an alternate method for visible light transmittance measurement alongside ASTM D1003.
One important regulatory point remains unchanged: although ANSI Z97.1-2026 has been published, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission currently continues to reference ANSI Z97.1-2015 (R2020) for regulatory compliance under 16 CFR Part 1201. For organizations working across North America, the 2026 edition has also been harmonized by CGSB as its 2026 version.
